Abstract

A thousand teeth of the retrocanine region of a representative sample
of subjects aged 18— 20 years were examined for the presence of secondary caries, using the Bitewing method and clinical inspection. The aim of the study was to establish the possibilities of the above mentioned method in the diagnostics of secondary caries. Seventy cases of secondary caries were registered. Twenty-three (33%) secondary lesions were detected by clinic examination alone, whereas radiological method bitewing disclosed 62 (88%) out of the total number of 70 secondary lesions observed. The use of the method resulted in a statistically significant difference between the results thus obtained (mean difference, 2 + 1; t = 8.0; p < 0.05).
