Abstract
This investigation had been undertaken in order to establish the identity or difference in the dental age of twins, with special reference to their zygosity, age, sex and somatic development. A total of 100 twin pairs aged 5 years and 10 months to 15 yearis and 10 months of elither sex, 40 monozygotic and 60 dizygotic, coming from northwestern Croatia were examined. The dental age was assessed according to Noilla's scheme, within the limits permitted by the orthopan tomographic pictures taken. Somatic development was scored according to the height and weight of the examinees. The results, presented in tables and statistically analyzed, do not point to significant differences in the dental age between monozygotic and dizygotic twins or between single twin pairs, except for the case of three pairs. Similarly, no differences have been noted with regard to age, sex or somatic development, apart from a few sporadic caises. In twin pairs the differences in maturity ranged within one degree according to Noll as scale, except for two extreme cases where they amounted to 2.3 and 5.5. degrees, respectively. Differences in the tempo of development during the eruption phase, in the sense of acceleration, could be noted only in the C-M1 teeth segments, as a consequence of a premature loss on the zone of resistence. The results obtained indicate that the type of zygosiity, with regard to the parameters analyzed, cannot be considered a specific criterion.
