Abstract

The study comprised 16 women aged between 43— 73 years with the
postmenopause period longer than one year who suffered from the symptoms of stomatopyrosis, glossodiny, bad taste and objectively established xerostomy. The microscopic analysis was carried out in all patients in order to determine the oral epithelium thickness, the nucleus aging, the intensity of parakeratosis and the intensity of epithelial cells mitosis. The results obtained show that with aging a greater thickening appears in these patients as well as a higher frequency of epithelial cells the nuclei of which show aging. The intensity of parakeratosis and the intensity of mitosis of the epithelial cells in these patients do not show significant changes with aging.
In conclusion it is said that the obtained results explain the behaviour
of the oral epithelium in cases with present oral symptoms and some oral diseases in older persons and give an insight into the reactive capacity of their epithelium during the therapeutic treatment of the diseased mucous membrane.
