Abstract

Stomatopyrosis often associated in literature with the term glossopyrosis or glossodynia, develops from local irritations and other general causes. Clinical experience shows and many authors have confirmed that gastric disturbances can be an etiological cause of stomatopyrosis and that there is a direct relation between the oral cavity and gastric tract. Due to the absence of precise evidence about the role of gastric factors in the development of stomatopyrosis, we examined the frequency of gastric changes in persons with acute symptoms of stomatopyrosis and determined whether the frequency of this disease is related to the patient's age. The investigation was based on the clinical examination of the oral cavity, laboratory findings of the stomach juice and anamnestic data. The results were statistically analyzed. The examination showed that of 125 patients with stomatopyrosis, half of them had gastric disturbances and the majority were older. The correlation between the frequency of gastric disturbances in patients with stomatopyrosis and their age, and the control group of examinees without stomatopyrosis, was positive. In clinical interpretation gastric disturbances, especially in older persons, should be considered in the diagnosis and therapy of stomatopyrosis.
