Abstract

The size of the mesiodistal diameter of the third mandible molar (M3) was determined (in 685 orthopantomograms from 330 male and 355 female orthodontic patients between 8— 20 years of age. The study included 1299 buds of the upper and 1239 buds of the lower M3. For a comparison the mesiodistall diameters of the M 2 were measured. Analysis of the results indicated that in addition to the variability of dimensions, there its a definite relationship between the size of the M 3 and the location, sex and number of teeth. The following conclusions were drawn: — the meziodistal diameter of M3 varies between 6— 18.1 mm. — M3 are significantly smaller in the maxilla and significantly larger in the mandibule in both quadrants and in both sexes. — M 3 are significantly larger in the right quadrant and significantly smaller in the left im both jaws and in boths sexes. — M3 are significantly smaller in femaies than in males. — lower M 3 are larger than the upper in 75%. — M 3 are smaller than M2 in 80%.
— M3 are significantly smaller in the examinees than in the control group. *— rudimentary M 3 were found two times more often in the examinees.
