Abstract

The author in the introduction describes various types of gangrene and necrosis of the dental pulp, and their causes. An exact verification of such a condition can be made by measuring the pH value of the content of the root canal. The author tried to find the ranges of the pH values in open and closed gangrenes of the dental pulp, if there is any significant difference between them, and whether such a finding can be of help in the prognosis of the method and the duration of the treatment. For the measurement of the actual pH value the colorimetric method was applied, and it was found on a sample of hundred single root teeth that the arithmetic mean value of the pH in a closed gangrene was x — 7,8, and in an open gangrene x — 6,78. A t-test verified a significant difference between the arithmetic mean values.
