Abstract

A general insight in the phenomenon of fluorescence in connection with the colour of the teeth is reported. The importance of the illumination applied is emphasized with a particular concern to the presence of the ultraviolet component in the usual sources of light. Also the standard sources of light are examined to determine the amount of the ultraviolet rays that cause fluorescence. It is found that various sources of light with a different spectral distribution contain larger or smaller amounts of ultraviolet radiation and a remarkable effect upon the occurence of the difference in shade of the colour between the fluorescenting and non — fluorescenting artifical teeth when altering the conditions of light.
