Abstract
More than 300 million people worldwide are estimated to suff er from asthma. Increased asthma prevalence and increased asthma management costs have been recorded. The main pathogenic mechanism of asthma is a chronic airway infl ammation. This knowledge has redirected the treatment of asthma from symptomatic to basic, i.e. anti-infl ammatory, treatment. Global guidelines for asthma treatment are used to increase asthma management worldwide. The most commonly used guidelines are those of the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), updated in 2012. Inhalation corticosteroids (ICS) are currently the most effi cient drugs for asthma treatment. In line with the guidelines, ICS administered in monotherapy are the treatment of choice for permanent asthma in all age groups. New inhalation corticosteroid formulations with ultra-fi ne particles ensure distribution of the medicinal product to small airways as well, which may contribute to better asthma control.
