Abstract

Numerous patients present for treatment to our dentistry outpatients departments. Part of these patients suffer from some chronic disease. Most frequently hypertension and various cardiac diseases are involved, followed by diabetics, patients with a tendency to haemorrhage and patients suffering from an allergy and those who are prone to collapse in the course of a dental intervention. Normally no dentist working outside a clinical department would risk to extract a tooth under a local anaesthetic in one of these patients. The authors investigated a group of 90 of these patients suffering from a chronic disease and they observed the various complications that developed. On the basis of the results obtained the authors concluded that general complications in the course of tooth extractions are rare in these patients if the correct procedure is followed. This conclusion is, however, not an indication that no special care must be taken but a warning to approach the problem of tooth extraction in chronic patients with more seriousness.
