Abstract
A sample group consisting of 52 subjects wearing partial prosthetic appliances was investigated by the authors to establish the relationship of the masseter and temporal muscles action potential and the test of masticatory function. All these patients were wearing Kennedy Class I lower partial prostheses and the entire experimental group was divided into two subgroups. One subgroup consisted of patients with total upper artificial dentures and the other group of patients with partial upper prosthetic appliances. In all of these test subjects the authors succeeded in recording the digital integrated electromyogram and at the same time the patients were subjected to the masticatory function test. On the basis of statistical elaboration, an analysis of the results and a comparative analysis of the data the authors have found that different degrees of sensitivity were seen in the experimental groups during the electromyographic testing of the central occlusion, the tests on masticatory function and in the electromyographic testing by means of serial electromyograms done for each of the experimental groups. The correlation coefficient thus obtained prompted the authors to conclude that by means of the digitally integrated sums of the masseter and temporal muscles action potentials obtained by serial electromyograms the efficacy of mastication and the functional value of the replacement may be evaluated without the additional testing method for masticatory function.
