Abstract

The authors define the term rationalisation and Ergonomy in therapeutic dentistry and make recommendations for up-to-date methods of work to be introduced in dental practice. The time of duration of the expert intervention will thus be shortened, the effect of work enhanced, while the energy of the dentist will be preserved. Since the main domain of work in therapeutic dentistry is the preparation of cavities, the well known, but not always respected conceptions: preparation of cavity, retention, preventive enlarging of cavity and resistance of the remaining hard dental tissue are discussed by the authors. Considering the fact that time and energy saved are important factors, the authors describe in detail a simplified method for the preparation of cavities by means of diamond drills and high speed drills. They emphasize, however, that treatment of the carious dentine and the terminal phase of the preparations should be undertaken by means of the classic drill. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that all phases of work in therapeutic dentistry must be carried out following a certain fixed chronological order.
