Abstract

After an introduction with a review of the literature on the aetiology of dolor post extractionen, the author investigates her own material with the purpose of finding out eventually some new facts and to check the well-known aetiologic factors of post extraction pain. On 11 168 extractions of teeth in local anesthesia there were 3,4% of cases with post extraction pain. The percentage was greater in women than in men. Then investigations were also carried on according to the age of the patients and the results show that there was no significant difference in the occurrence of pain. Trauma during extraction played an important role and decreased bleeding because of the hemostatic effect of the epinephrine injected with the local anesthetic. The occurrence of this complication after tooth extraction was noticed to be of a greater frequency in the mandible than in the maxilla.
