Abstract

Split was for long one of the most important centres of transit commerce between the East and the West due to its geographical position and importance assigned to it by Venice for economic reasons. The commerce of Split was not turned only to Venice but its merchants used to travel and deal with many other towns on the Apenine peninsula especially with Ancona and Senigallia. Such an intensive economic activity in Split create a firm economic ground and a number of rich citizens able to follow European trends in every field of civilized and cultural way of life.
