Abstract

Owing to its geographic, ecological, climatic and hydrological characteristic, the Makarska coast was inhabited very early. The oldest evidence of human existence in this area are prehistoric cairns and hill-forts. Many archeological finds speak of a rather high population density in the antiquity. The Slavic inhabitans who were to settle in the area between the Cetina and Neretva river were the Neretljani described by Constantine Porfirogenetus. It is not until the Turkish rule that we can follow the development of traditional architecture.
