Surnames of population Pakoštane in 17th and 18th century on the basis of Glagolitic register of souls

Abstract

The article describes the formation surnames of population Pakoštane from the late 16th to the middle 19th century, on the basis of information derived from parish registers of dead, registers of souls and tabular registers, Godar, and parish registers of confessions and communion (Status Animarum) from middle 19th century, and other accessible documents, such as testaments, lists, and various reports. Until 1825, most of this registers were written in italicized Glagolitic script (Glagolitic quick script) and in Latin script afterwards. It tried to connect families mentioned in the Contract of 1597th, over List of population from 1608th, registers of souls from the late 17th and 18th century, Parish Registar of dead and transcribing Godar from beginning of 17th century, which led to the middle of 20th century, to the parish registers of confessions and communion (Status Animarum) from the middle of 19th century. This book contains a special section for nicknames, which used for easier detection of emerging and transforming of one surname to another (based on father’s or mother’s names or nickname) within some families. It was concluded that most of the surname (family) from 1597 and 1608th year are survive, but in other forms (transformed into new surnames) until the middle 19th century, but up to the present day. Confraternities were an important factor in the development of the village. They are also important for studying everyday life of local population in the period of 17th and 18th century. All registers of confraternities, which were mentioned, disappeared, but on the basis of transcripts Glagolitic Godar we can proof the number of confraternities. Therefore, Godar contains information about the belonging dead persons to a particular confraternity.
