Abstract

The article contains reflections on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the reintroduction of religious education in Croatian schools, with special emphasis on secondary school religious education. In the first part are some ideas that occurred to the author on the occasion of the eighth anniversary, and in the second are his thoughts after two decades. In the beginning, it was necessary to determine the type of subject that religious education would be, who would teach it and how the religious educator would be prepared. It was also necessary to prepare new plans, programs, textbooks and educational aids, as well as establish the appropriate institutions such as national and diocesan catechetical offices. The final section presents proposals to encourage the promotion of catechesis and religious pedagogy or parish catechesis and religious education in schools, as well as education in general. For this purpose, a more active involvement of religious education and religious educators in the new evangelization should be considered, together with the promotion of shared enthusiasm and ecclesiality. Today’s and tomorrow’s religious educator is called to be an expert and witness, whose increased involvement in the area of media would be desirable.
