Abstract

The hostile environment which often marked Europe in the 19th century had a severe impact on the promotion of vocations. During the period in which a systematic vocation ministry was not developed, Don Bosco felt particularly prompted to effectively respond to this situation.
Although he was not alone, his personage and style have made him widely recognized as an animator for vocations. He managed to impress and attract many people to an educational mission for the evangelization of youth. In his work he not only claimed new vocations for his core projects, but also for the local diocesan.
Don Bosco’s vocation ministry becomes meaningful only within its educational and evangelising work. The most distinctive elements of his educational system are particularly important for the pastoral care of vocations.
