Abstract

Voluntary work is an ancient historical reality. The importance and value of volunteer work is recognized and promoted both by society and the Church. The United Nations, European Union, including the Republic of Croatia recommend voluntary work, as evidenced by numerous documents, initiatives, the international day of volunteer work and a special designated year of volunteer work and numerous international and local activities and initiatives within civil society. The Catholic Church from its foundation promotes selfless service and various forms of volunteer work. Both the European Year of volunteer work and proposals for an international Salesian voluntariat are an invitation in 2011 to more actively promote voluntary work amongst youth and adults. Some examples from experience are an incentive and opportunity for further strengthening volunteer work in parish pastoral work in general, especially within youth ministry and adult education, charitable organizations and religious education in school.
