From a Doctrinal to an Evangelizing Catechesis. Contemporary Orientation of Catechesis in Slovenia
Tadej Stegu
Abstract
In Slovenia, there is no religious instruction in public schools. This specific situation has caused the development of religious instruction in parishes. This paper briefly shows the development of catechesis in Slovenia from 1952, when religious instruction was abolished from all schools, to this day. The article brings important directives of the General Council of the Church in Slovenia for catechesis that propose a change in direction from a doctrinal based catechesis to an evangelizing catechesis: they place catechesis within the framework of the new evangelization, they place the main emphasis on adults instead of children, they do not assume a majority Christian practice and they recommend a catechesis which seeks answers to existential questions in the light of faith, instead of a catechesis which merely teaches. The Catechetical symposium in 2009 which gave an overview of the social trends and changes in the last few years, confirms the validity of such orientations.
