Abstract

The document on voluntary service within the Salesian mission which was prepared by the Departments of Youth Ministry and the Missions of the general Council of don Bosco's works describes the main idea and gives guidelines for achieving voluntary service within the Salesian environment. The article emphasizes the profile of the volunteer and proposes criteria for Salesian, ecclesial and social evaluation of volunteering. Voluntary service is a sign of the times, which is evident by the multitude of diverse experiences in the Salesian world. Voluntary service can be a great experience and is open to all young people of good will, as well as for interested adults. Promoting voluntary service makes up a great part of the Salesian educational-pastoral project, and includes a specific educational process. The article goes on to describe the main features of local and international systems of voluntary service. An important component of the Salesian volunteer system is its community aspect, especially the role of the community that sends volunteers and the community which receives volunteers. The article describes the formation process of volunteers and provides appropriate guidelines for animating Salesian volunteers.
