Abstract

The Second Vatican Council invites the faithful to fully, actively and consciously participate in the liturgical acts. The author points out how various forms of sacred music can facilitate a more integral and quality participation. "Participation" in the liturgy can be manifested in various manners. It is important to note that liturgical songs are also a "confession of faith" for the faithful that thakes part in the liturgy. An important issue is whether or not our songs express the faith during the liturgy and to what extent certain types of music and instruments are adequate for liturgical acts. The author gives several key preconditions for allowing active participation of the faithful, the importance of which is seen in various church documents. Special attention is given to participation in the Eucharistic mystery and its correct understanding, adaptation, modernization and inculturation. All of this demands a life-long liturgical formation for all in the Church.
