Elastomeric expansion joints for bridges

Abstract

This paper starts with assertion that expansion joints made of prefabricated reinforced elastomeric (rubber) segments have been used in bridge construction for several decades now. Experience gained in the past period is described. Circumstances that brought about invention of this type of expansion joints, and the use of these joints since their invention, are described in chronological order. Multi-year experience from U.S.A. and Germany is presented in more detail. Current regulations relating to the use of these expansion joints are commented on.
