Abstract

The author describes the situation of religious education in democratic Spain at the end of the 20th as well as at the beginning of the 21st century. As a first he points out to the legal, ecclesiastic, sociological and theological presumptions, and after that gives a panoramic view of the actual position of religious education in the Spanish educational system. During that period religious education in public and private schools in Spain developed from the school catechesis to marginalization until the newest legal provision on the introduction of a new course, called society, culture and religion, in all Spanish public and private schools, with the two possibilities: denominational and nondenominational.
