Hubert Pettan’s Correspondence from the Music Collection of the National and University Library of Zagreb

Abstract

Hubert Pettan’s correspondence is kept in the Music Collection of the National and University Library of Zagreb. Over a thousand letters have been classified according to their contents into groups of private and formal (business) letters, invitations and programmes, Christmas, New Year’s, Easter and birthday greeting cards, postcards, obituaries, commercials, correspondence intended for other members of the household and a group of diverse content (under Miscellanea).
Correspondence may present an exuberant source of information about the sender and/or receiver. Most frequently, these are private facts about the life of an important individual, but Hubert Pettan’s correspondence reveals more. His collecting spirit makes this collection the data source for the musical events, individuals and institutions of his time. Since the majority of this information has been found in the business group of correspondence as well, as in the one that contains programmes and invitations, it has been thoroughly examined. Nevertheless, we believe that items of other groups carry information about the receiver together with other valuable data.
