Abstract

The microflora was examined in 73 plaque smears obtained from the approximal surfaces beside fillings (45 samples) and intact crowns (28 samples) using standard microbiological methods. Among the streptococci isolated from the plaque beside fillings with secondary caries Streptococcus faecalis var. faecalis was the most dominant strain (26.3%), while in the plaque smears from intact teeth alpha streptococci were the most numerous (31.7%). These findings may prove useful in seeking an explanation for the findings made in our previous study, when enterococci were the most often isolated strain in the canal of periapically affected teeth with filling on the crown, and alpha streptococci the most common in non-cured caries. In view of the statistical significance of the results obtained, a larger number of target samples should be examined.
