Abstract

The temporomandibular articulation has been a subject of scientific interest in an ever increasing number of researches. Static radiological investigations could not provide a complete picture of a relationship among the parts of the articulation in function. As we were interested in the articulation kinetics, the method of video radiography, allowing the parts of the articulation in function to be observed, was applied in this study. The study was carried out in 12 examinees, using a video-system connected to a multi-purpose X-ray device. Roentgenography of both the right and left jaw articulations during opening and closing the mouth as well as of the propulsive movements was made in all subjects. In a large number of subjects with articular disturbances, condylar articulation was found to markedly protrude ahead of tuberculum articulare during movements. An alteration in the picture of the condylar motions during the movements examined was also notable.
