Abstract

This paper focuses on education in minority languages in Slovakia and it is based on written documents, historical, encyclopaedic and statistical data, as well as an analysis of the current situation. Th e introductory part deals with historical circumstances that infl uenced the formation of national minorities and their schools on the territory of the present day Republic of Slovakia. Th e position of the minorities and the opportunities for education in minority languages is defined by the social (political) context. Apart from analysing the educational situation of the largest minorities, Hungarian and Ruthenian, the paper also deals with the German, Roma, Ukrainian, Czech, Bulgarian, Croatian and Polish national minorities. Th e overview of the development of education in the languages of minorities in Slovakia includes the specificities in terms of Jewish, Bulgarian and German minority education, as well as data from the Report on the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages in the Republic of Slovakia. The area of education and the attitudes of the minorities towards majority population and language are addressed in the chapter on the role of communicational and educational aspects in the life of national minorities.
