Abstract
Aim: The aim of this research is to present how the Department of Pediatric Surgery has implemented contemporary and up to date surgical treatment of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) throughout its 50 years long existence. Methods: During this time period, 632 children were treated for VUR, out of which 69 % were girls. The treatment was surgical, and the operative techniques were almost entirely extravesical. In the last decade, endoscopic sub/intra/ureteral injection of dextranomer and hyaluronic acid has also been performed. Results: A high level of success has been achieved by the operative techniques used for VUR treatment at the Department of Pediatric Surgery. The success rate is, depending on the used technique, between 95.3 % (Bradić- Pasini operative technique) and 97.5 % (Lich- Gregoir operative technique). Total success rate of endoscopic treatment is 81.9 %. Discussion: The surgical treatment of VUR at the Department of Pediatric Surgery has been conducted since its foundation. A high level of success has been achieved by implementation of contemporary operative and endoscopic techniques. The success rate corresponds to that presented in the recent literature. Conclusion: Reflux nephropathy, hypertension and kidney failure as possible complications of VUR are prevented by a quality and competenttreatment of VUR in pediatric population.
