Abstract

The author analyses the living conditions in one mountainous Montenegrin
village. Cattle breeding is main activity of the villagers. The prestige of a family
is valuated by the quantity of land and number of cattle et possesses. There is no
electricity in the village. It is isolated because communications are very bad. Still some changes in the post-war period happened. They are described by the author
(feeding, dressing, education, housing conditions, abandonment of old customs, etc).
Position of households is different: economically stronger ones send their
children to schools where they prepare themselves for various nonagricultural
occupations while economically weaker ones have surplus of labour power and as
unqualified workers migrate to other regions in search for seasonal employment,
but as a rule return to their poor village.
