Abstract

The author attempts to chronologically and segmentedly summarize the most important processes and procedures by which it was attempted to modernize and professionalize the Russian army. The paper deals exclusively with the post-Sovietic period of Russian statehood, and tries to briefly introduce geostrategic position in which Russia found itself in that period, which largely determined the directions of many reforms. In demonstrating the socioeconomic breakdown of the defense system the wish is to emphasize and highlight the selective effectiveness of the reforms without losing critical distance, the inadequacies of the latter are being highlighted, and the circumstances and elements that have proven to be the key barriers to them. The contours of recent strategic objectives in the development of the Russian army, and the potentiality of their efficient achievement are shown in the paper.
