Abstract

Self-management in a work organization is, in fact, a de-monopolization of
the power resting with individuals or groups outside the ranks of the producers.
It is the path on which the producers establish control over their own work.
Operationally, this is achieved through their participation in self-managing decision
making.
An agricultural estate is a self-managing work organization in which agricultural
production is organized with a definite division of labour. The division of
labour contains the social structure of the work organization. The elements of
this structure are in certain mutual relationships established during the production
process itself. These relationships arise from the special roles and positions
which at the same time represent different (unco-ordinated) interests, wishes,
objectives and views. The possession of self-managing rights enables the producers
to co-ordinate their unco-ordinated interests, objectives, wishes and views through
participation in self-managing decision making. In practice, this participation is
realized (1) by the submission of proposals at the meetings of the managerial
organs, and (2) by the adoption or rejection of the submitted proposals.
In putting forward proposals the producers/managers express their own interests
and views which may be acceptable or not to the other participants in self-
-managing decision making. Thus the relationships established in production become
manifest in the process of self-managing decision making. The elements of
the socio-professional structure (permanent variant) form the basis of the pattern
of self-managing relationships (submission and adoption or rejection of proposals)
on agricultural estates.
