Abstract

In this work the author shows the
concrete social framework of the
process of employment of women
in Yugoslavia (based on the
data for the SR Croatia).
Starting from the hypothesis that
the employment of women is of
great importance for the
transformation of their social
position, the text stresses that it is
necessary to analyze not only
quantitative, but also qualitative
factors that govern the employment
of women. It thus gives the
indicators showing the volume and
dynamics, and also indicators
showing the quality of the
(un)employment of women (data
on socio-spatial, educational and
professional composition, and on
composition according to branches
of the economy).
In the author’s opinion the
following factors govern the volume
and qualitative dimension of the
employment of women, and the
fact that they are more exposed to
negative selection in employment:
the state of employment in general,
which cannot fulfil the needs of
the total population for
employment; the level of
technological development, which
is one of the main limits to the
employment of women in many
activities; the structure of the
economy of certain regions (it can
favourize or select certain groups
of the population — for instance
women); deviations from
normative-value standards in the
employment practice (especially a
tendency not to employ women —
in general, or in more responsible,
creative places of work);
characteristics of the female
working force (professional
structure, and also their attitudes, motives, aspirations, values and
interests relevant to employment);
the degree to which family
functions have been socialized,
on which depends the quality of
the woman’s work and the quality
of family and private life.
