Rate of Urbanization in Yugoslavia
Ivanka Ginić
Abstract
As regards level of urbanization, Yugoslavia is at the bottom of the list of
European countries. However, there are also considerable regional differences.
Slovenia, which has the country’s lowest proportion of rural population, is marked
by a low level of urbanization, while Vojvodina and Macedonia are marked by
hyper-urbanization. The growth of urban population is the result of migration
rather than of natural growth.. Urbanization in Yugoslavia which has recently been
marked by a tendency of decentralization, is expected to develop at a medium rate
in the future.
