Preliminary communication
Peasant Farms and Agriculture in Žumberak
Milan Župančić
Abstract
The main problem addressed in this
article are current conditions and
tendencies of change in family farms in
Žumberak. A questionnaire included 122
family farms in the region, and on its
basis we analyzed the relevant economic
and socioprofessional indicators of rural
households.
Most farms cover small areas mostly
consisting of pastures and meadows, with
very little cultivable land. Most of the
labour force are non-farmers, very old,
and with a low level of education. This
results in very low production and poor
economic results in peasant agriculture.
The future of the region is very somber,
and the unfavourable demographic
situation, which will grow even worse in
the future, will result in the perceptible
further stagnation and regression of
Žumberak. Without thought-out state
intervention the region will encounter
complete demographic collapse.
