Abstract

Pharmacists have an advisory and educational role because they emphasise the importance of blood pressure self-control, adherence to therapy and introduction of non-pharmacological measures to treat hypertension. Their role is also important in hypertension control
because they follow-up patients and identify potential adverse
reactions and any patient non-compliance. The information contained herein complies with the latest ESH/ESC guidelines and its purpose is to provide pharmacists both with the basic information about hypertension, blood pressure monitoring and therapy, and with some new knowledge which differs from the earlier ESH/ESC guidelines, such as new target values for arterial blood pressure in elderly, diabetic and high-risk patients. This information also emphasises an indispensable role of pharmacists as “available” health care providers who, in cooperation with other health care providers, may enhance the success of hypertension treatment and control.
