VTMIS Service in the Improvement of the Adriatic Sea Maritime Transport Safety and Environmental Protection

Abstract

The paper elaborates the establishment of the Croatian vessel traffic monitoring and information service. The structure, current position and functions of the service have been presented, in accordance with the guidelines of the European Union related to surveillance and monitoring of maritime traffic, aimed toward the improvement of maritime transport safety and protection of marine environment. At the same time, maritime traffic in the Adriatic Sea has been presented, along with developmental guidelines for all maritime transport and traffic segments. Further possibilities of service development have been discussed with the emphasis on regional and European cooperation.
