Abstract

This paper presents the Eucharistic ecclesiology of Nikolai Afanassieff, an Orthodox theologian. In the first part the author explains the term and meaning of Eucharistic ecclesiology in Afanassieff’s theological thought in light of the distinction between Eucharistic and universal ecclesiology, the relation between the local and universal Church, the idea of Church-in-Priority and the problem of primacy and autocephaly. In the second part the author presents criticism of Afanassieff’s ecclesiology given by two prominent Orthodox theologians Ioannis Zizioulas and Dumitru Staniloae, who have determined to a large extent the reception of Afanassief’s ideas in Orthodoxy. In the third part the author speaks about the renewed interest in the Eucharistic ecclesiology of Nikolai Afanassieff, first through the proposals of the Orthodox theologian Radu Bordeianu and then through the analysis of a Catholic Anastacia Wooden. In any case, the Eucharistic ecclesiology of Nicolai Afanassieff encourages a serious approach to important theological and ecumenical issues.
