Abstract

A comprehensive presentation of this complex current problem, which is not completely solved, is given. It is mentioned that since there are more than 120 different articulators, a practician is disorientated and needs some directives for work. Common characteristics of ali articulators are given together with classifications according to dimensions, theories on mandibular movements and registration systems. Systemic causes of errors are also shovvn as well as special elements of current articulators such as: 1. movable, adaptable intercondyloid distance 2. ARCON — condyle principle 3. divided intercondyloid axis 4. mechanical elements for individual condyle path
5. adaptable registered Benett's movement 6. special incisal pin.
A significant improvement consists of the transmission tovvard the coordinates of the head according to the suborbital indicator andcephalometric position of the prosthetic surface.A critical presentation of the arches by Hana u, Lauritzen and Grebner as well as of panthographic registration is given. In Critical Revievv some objective and subjective defects in the accurate imitation of masticatory movements are shown. Hanau’s model-H, Gerber’s condylator and De Trey's New-Simplex and Whip Mix are mentioned as simple articulators suitable for wide application. It is concluded that in addition to the errors of the system, which due to improvements become rare, errors in registration easily occur, particularly during the transmission of the registered to the articulator. In case of a total prosthesis it is recommended that the teeth are set in calote sphere in Gnathomate with cephalometric positioning of the prosthetic surface. As in disfunctions with clinical symptoms this is not sufficient, one of the above mentioned articulators should be applied.
