Abstract

This study proposes to re-examine the nature of English 17"' century concettism against the ac ground of contemporary insights into the nature of the phenomenon in European Baroque poetry. Typical instances of concettistic patterns in the poetry of English post-Renaissance poets are scrutinized, attention being paid throughout to their most frequent structural functions as much as to their most requent rhetorical components. The results lead the author to the conclusion that a unified set of poetic motivations, strongly resembling those operating in European Baroque poetry,
underly the concettistic practices of numerous English post-Renaissancevpoets. A wider recognition of the fact may have important consequences for the future study of English post-Renaissance literary developments.
