Abstract

The possibility of strengthening reinforced concrete girders subjected to bending stress, by means of fiber-reinforced polymer plates that are glued onto the tensile surface of the chord, is presented in the paper. The required surface of the plate is calculated based on bending capacity requirements and, as separation is possible at the ends of the plate, an additional requirement is to check the shear stress and normal stress in that area. Two methods applied for this checking are presented. The more recent method is recommended as it is more accurate and is additionally supported by experimental results.
