Joyce's Fire and Ice: the Reader of "Ulysses" between Involvement and Distanciation

Abstract

Making critical use of Shklovsky's term defamiliarization and
Mukarovsky's actualization in conjunction with recent critical
trends (Jakobson's literariness of ltterature, Baarthes' espace
littéraire), the author discusses the strategies used by Joyce in
alternately involving and distancing the reader of Ulysses,
enumerating and categorizing, as well as demonstrating how they
function on examples from the nove.
