Abstract

Arterial hypertension is the main independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, the main chronic non-infections disease and the most common cause of death on the global level. In an effort to make treatment as efficient and safe as possible, a number of professional associations have published guidelines for the management of this disease. New European and American guidelines for arterial hypertension, which are also the main topic of this review article, were published in 2013. These guidelines offer the expected new contents, as well as similar recommendations for diagnosis and treatment. The main disagreements refer to patients with stage 1 hypertension and no proven risk factors and to elderly hypertensive patients. Both groups require an individual approach, definition of a more flexible target value, and strict implementation of non-pharmacological measures. In antihypertensive treatment, attention should be paid to its efficiency and safety.
