Abstract

This work will, through the analysis, synthesis and interpretation of newspaper articles, available in the newspaper collection of the Museum of Slavonia and Baranja, present the dramatic, critical influence of Ivan Krstitelj Švrljuga in Osijek’s National Defense (Narodna obrana) newspaper, in the period between 1908 and 1912. Ivan Švrljuga’s work as a critic clearly shows his educative-impressionistic style, which was a result of the context in which he wrote. This was a time in which theater became a national institution, a place in which the foundations of the Croatian literary word were still being forged, national sentiment was awakened, and the audience educated. Despite a still undeveloped sense for all of the elements that go into a stage performance, and without deeper analysis of the works, Švrljuga outlined a path for and provided the basic structure of Osijek’s critique as a genre, and today his influence represents a valuable cultural heritage and documentary testimony on the history of Osijek’s theater, the development of critique, and the social context of the present and the future.
