Abstract

In this paper the author discusses the book Književnost i kazalište (Literature and Theatre) written by Branko Gavella (1885-1962; the book was published after his death, in 1970), the most prominent theatre director in Croatia and ex-Yugoslavia in the period between 1920s and 1960s. In these 19 essays Gavella is focused on the relation between a literary, dramatic word and its theatrical performance/expression.
On the thematic level, Gavella’s writing is autobiographic, with ethical and poetical issues. On the formal level, it has a strong poetic nature reflected in the use of words, style figures, the dynamics of the images and open-minded reminiscence of personal and professional experience. That results in the intellectual depth of intimate creative search as well as Gavella’s understanding of social and sociological background of dramatic works, and theatrical and literary phenomena – both at home, in Croatia, and on the stages abroad.
