Abstract

This paper deals with the analysis of theatrical reviews written in German which Branko Gavella wrote in the first few years of the 20th century, for Zagreb’s daily news paper Agramer Tagblatt. Based on the reviews, the author researches the relation of Gavella as a critic in regard to certain components of the play, which means that focused on dramatic plays and finding basic idea behind them, to genre issues, and performance by the cast, especially stage speech, rather than directing, set design, and costumes. The analysis shows that Gavella considered the theatrical topics and issues that would preoccupy him as a director even as the critic of Agramer Tagblatt.
