Abstract

This article examines presence, role and importance of Branko Gavella (Zagreb, 1885 – Zagreb, 1962), a most important theatre director, theatre scholar and pedagogue in Croatian theatre of 20th century in theatre revue Prolog and Novi Prolog, form 1968 until 1986. There are many Gavella’s articles on the art of acting, psychological analysis of actor’s inner self, essays on different problems of theatre practice and particular theatre performances under Gavella’s direction in Zagreb and Beograd. Gavella also was as director in theatres all over the Central Europe: Ljubljana, Maribor, Prague, Brno, Milano, etc. In two dominant thematic entirety – Gavella, Director, Theatre (Prolog 28, 1976) and Gavella –Belgrade periods (Prolog 48-49, 1981) many famous writers, critics, directors, actors and theatre scholars form Croatia and abroad wrote about Gavella and his work in the field of the theatre directing, theatre studies and pedagogy. All of this is collected and presented in this article.
