Abstract
Today, group technology principles are used in many areas of manufacturing. However they are yet to find their usage in the injection moulding industry. There is great potential for cost-saving in product development process by using group technology. Also, standardizing the cavity - core set for part families gains the savings in mould production by using the same mould base to manufacture various parts. One of the techniques used for products grouping is classification and coding. A group technology code is an alphanumeric string which represents critical information about the product in a concise manner. Comparing the group technology codes of two products is a quick and efficient method for estimating product similarity in selected attributes. This paper describes the elements of the coding system by developing the code for injection moulded parts and their respective moulds.
