Abstract

The paper describes how string musical instruments produce sound. First,we introduce some basic notions of acoustics and clarify the idea of Fourier analysis and synthesis of waves, as well as the notion of consonance and dissonance of intervals. Then we introduce a model of transverse oscillations of a thin string, and use the Fourier method to solve the derived wave equation.
Finally, we analyze oscillations of strings of a guitar and a piano.
