Abstract

Earthquakes, landslides, explosions, collapsible soils, aircraft crashes, railway collisions, vehicle accidents, lack of maintenance of buildings, etc. - these are some of the possible causes that could lead to building (structural) collapses. Wherever equipment and other emergency units: firemen, emergency medical services and police, have no means to solve the problem, it is on specialized collapse rescue units to intervene. Those specialized units, being an integral part of the fire-fighting departments, are equipped and trained for demanding rescue from the ruins interventions. Their task is to quickly respond and rescue buried victims with top safety precaution measures taken to provide security to both - the victim and the rescue team. Structural collapse rescue techniques are developing more and more compared to the similar techniques integrated into the firefighting technical services. Being the product of the constant rescue units training and the introduction of new modernized equipment, their aim is to improve rescue missions. At the same time, they also introduce new dangers which must be eliminated or at least reduced to the lowest possible level.
