Abstract

The most typisal specific qualities of the lexical characteristics in the dialects of Buzet, south-west Istria, nortb chakavian, central chakavian, south chakavian and of the island of Lastovo are studied. When analysing the distribution of individual lexemes special attention has been paid to the differences in the same dialect and to the connections among different dialects. The analysis of the chakavian lexeme shows that the vocabulary is very much subjected to the influences which cause rather quick changes, but that it is also conservative at the same time retaining very interesting archaisms. The Romance influences are most frequent, but archaisms represent the original Slavic heritage.
